One thing I loved about this trip is that it wasn’t trying to be anything extravagant. It was simply a chance to get away for a few days, explore somewhere beautiful, and enjoy the slower pace that coastal towns seem to encourage naturally.

📍 The Route

The road trip started in Portland before making its way through Vancouver and Longview, Washington, eventually crossing back into Oregon toward Astoria and Seaside.

Along the way, Regina recommends making a stop at:

Bradley State Scenic Viewpoint

A simple but worthwhile stop featuring:

  ✔ Picnic tables

  ✔ Clean public restrooms

  ✔ Beautiful trees and scenery

✔ A peaceful place to stretch your legs

Not every memorable stop has to be some giant attraction. Sometimes it’s just a clean bathroom and a few minutes of quiet. 😅

Another favorite stop during the drive was Stashed Records in Longview, a must-visit if you’re into music, vinyl, or browsing local shops.

☕ Food & Drink Worth Stopping For

Let’s be honest. Food is half the reason most of us travel. 😂

Food on Oregon coast road trip

Here are Regina’s favorite stops from the trip:

Location What To Try Approximate Cost
Seize The Bagel (Vancouver) Vegan bagel with cream cheese $4.50
Sleeper Coffee (Astoria) Espresso $6
Blue Scorcher Bakery (Astoria) Vegan BLT $17.50
Blue Scorcher Bakery (Astoria) Focaccia Bread $8
McMenamins Gearhart Restaurant Caprese Eggs Benedict $11.50

A special shoutout goes to Blue Scorcher Bakery, which offers a variety of vegan and plant-based options in a cozy local atmosphere.

And yes, as someone who becomes emotionally attached to good bread, I fully support ordering the focaccia. 😌

🌊 Things Worth Adding To Your Itinerary

One thing Regina mentioned repeatedly was how much history and charm Astoria packs into a relatively small area.

Here are a few stops she recommends:

Attraction Cost Notes
Astoria Riverwalk Free Waterfront views, shops, restaurants, sea lions
Fort Astoria / Fort George Free Historic monument and local history
Heritage Museum $5 Free with Astoria Column pass
Astoria Column $10 annual parking pass Iconic views overlooking the area

The Riverwalk was one of the biggest highlights. Between the ships, waterfront views, and sea lions swimming nearby, it’s an easy place to spend a few hours wandering around.

Just do yourself a favor and bring binoculars. Regina would like me to emphasize this point. 😂🦭

🏖️ Don’t Skip Seaside Beach

Happy dog at seaside beach

Bonfire on Seaside Beach

If Astoria provided the history, Seaside provided the reset.

Regina and her boyfriend spent much of their time soaking up sunshine, walking the beach, listening to the waves, and collecting sand dollars.

In a world where every trip seems to come with a checklist of things you’re “supposed” to do, I actually love that one of their favorite memories involved doing absolutely nothing.

Sometimes that’s the entire point.

🏨 Where To Stay

McMenamins Gearhart Hotel

Regina and her boyfriend stayed here using complimentary nights earned through the McMenamins rewards program.

Pros:

  • Unique atmosphere
  • Golf course views
  • Great restaurant
  • Opportunity to redeem rewards

Things To Know:

  • More quirky than traditional
  • Fewer amenities than some standard hotels

If you’re looking for a more traditional beach hotel experience, Regina recommends checking out:

WorldMark Seaside

Closer to the beach and more in line with what most travelers expect from a resort-style stay.

🎁 Travel Hack: Use Rewards Programs & Gift Cards

One reason this trip stayed affordable was because lodging was covered using rewards.

Regina recommends looking into the:

McMenamins Cosmic Tripster Program

https://www.mcmenamins.com/about-passport

Whether it’s hotel rewards, travel points, loyalty programs, gift cards, or credit card perks, finding ways to reduce lodging and food costs can make a huge difference.

We’re big fans of this strategy ourselves. During our Southern Road Trip this past winter, we used a combination of rewards and gift cards to help offset costs along the way. Those little savings may not seem like much at first, but over the course of a trip they can really add up.

The less money spent on accommodations, the more money available for bakeries and coffee shops. Priorities. 😂

💰 Budget Breakdown

One thing I appreciated about this trip was how reasonable the overall cost remained.

Approximate spending for TWO people combined:

Category Approximate Cost
Food & Drinks ~$250
Attractions & Passes ~$50
Miscellaneous Stops ~$100
Lodging Covered with rewards
Total ~$400

Keep in mind that everyone’s spending habits will vary, but using rewards for lodging made a significant difference in keeping costs manageable.

📝 Quick Planning Tips

Before heading out on your own Oregon Coast adventure, here’s what Regina recommends:

✔ Bring binoculars for wildlife viewing

✔ Leave room in your itinerary for wandering

✔ Try local coffee shops and bakeries

✔ Take advantage of lodging rewards and gift cards when possible

✔ Build in time to simply enjoy the beach

✔ Don’t feel pressured to fill every hour with activities

The best moments often happen when you’re not rushing to the next thing.

🌊 Should You Add This To Your List?

What I like most about this trip is that it proves meaningful travel doesn’t have to be expensive, complicated, or packed with activities from sunrise to sunset.

Astoria and Seaside offer a little bit of everything: history, food, ocean views, local charm, and plenty of opportunities to slow down.

If you’re looking for a Pacific Northwest road trip that feels equal parts relaxing and interesting, this one might be worth adding to your list.

And if you end up spotting sea lions along the Riverwalk, don’t forget those binoculars. 🦭😂

One of the coolest parts about building Habitual Balance has been discovering just how many incredible stories, experiences, and perspectives exist beyond my own. Every person has a different journey, a different lesson, or a different place that’s left a lasting impact on them.

Which is exactly why I’m excited to keep building the HB Explorer Series. Sometimes the best recommendations, reminders, and perspective shifts come from real people simply sharing what they’ve lived, learned, tried, or stumbled into along the way.

If you have a travel story, adventure, life lesson, wellness journey, gardening story, hidden gem, favorite recipe, or experience you’d like to share with the HB community, I’d love to hear about it. Your story might be the little nudge someone else needs. 💛
